Robotic Pool Cleaners

Robotic pool cleaners differ from suction and pressure side cleaners in that they are electronic devices operating independently from the swimming pools filtration system. As such the manufacturers of these robots can incorporate computers and sensors in the units to aid it in avoiding obstacles in the pool. Another unique feature of robotic cleaners is the ability to mimic human cleaning. By programming the computers to turn the device at intervals it can more effectively clean the entire pool without revisiting previously cleaned areas as often is the case with random cleaners.

Robotic cleaners are completely self contained and require only an external source of electricity to perform its' duties. This power source is in the way of a transformer that reduces the voltage from standard household current to a safe 24 volts to reduce the chances of electrical shock. Filter bags or cartridges on board the unit capture all trash and debris it picks up and stores it for later removal. Most robotic cleaners use filters capable of removing particles as small as 2 microns. This is considerable smaller than most residential swimming pool filters are capable of removing. Also by trapping debris in its' own containment system robotic pool cleaners reduces the need for pool filter cleaning or back washing, helping to conserve water.

Robotic cleaners use high volume pumps to vacuum the pool, some moving as much as 5000 gallons of water an hour or more. The circulation of that amount of water helps to keep water temperatures more even, bringing cooler water from the pool floor towards the surface. This helps to reduce water evaporation, again conserving water. This also helps to thoroughly mix chemicals that may be lying on the pools' floor cutting down on chemical usage. This also may allow the pool filtration system to be operated less, saving energy and maintenance costs.

Another advantage robotic cleaners have over other type automatic cleaners is the ability to scrub the pool walls and floor area. Most suction and pressure side cleaners still require the pool to be manually brushed to loosen stubborn debris so they are able pick it up.

While the robotic cleaners seem to be the best choice for a pool cleaner, they do come with some drawbacks. Initial cost and expensive repairs are the two main concerns. They are electronic devices and they do break. It may be wise to inquire about warranties and repair facilities before making a decision on a particular brand of cleaner. As with most things, careful planning before hand can save you from unexpected surprises down the road.
